Langston Hughes’ “Mother to Son” is a poem that was published the first time in 1922 in a magazine named The Crisis (the crisis was dedicated to civil rights promotion in the U.S.A) and four years later it was published in The Weary Blues which was the first book of Hughes. The poem keys out the hardships faced in a racist society by black people, touching on the tons of obstructions and risks that racial discrimination brings about. It describes how white people don’t have to face the obstacles and dangers faced by black people. However, the speaker portrays that black people can sail through these difficulties through mutual support, resilience, and persistence. This poem appeals to me especially because it seems to transcend time. Despite so much struggle by the black people to fight racism in the united states and the world, racism is still a big issue. It's almost a century since this poem was written and the problems it addressed are still live and ailing the society.
